Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Councillor Samaresh Chakraborty of Bidhannagar’s Ward 9 is being sought by police after his alleged involvement in an extortion attempt and assault. On Sunday, a promoter in Bidhannagar reported that Chakraborty’s associates demanded ₹30 lakh from him. When the promoter failed to provide the money, the accused allegedly assaulted him with the butt of a gun, resulting in serious injuries. Despite being bloodied, the promoter managed to reach the Baguiati police station to file a complaint, detailing the assault and extortion attempt.
Following the complaint, two individuals, Babai and Shuvendu, were arrested within 24 hours. Both face charges of assault, attempted murder, extortion, and violations under the Arms Act. However, Councillor Samaresh Chakraborty and student leader Govinda Das, who are also named in the case, remain absconding. The police have been unable to arrest them despite continued efforts. Councillor Chakraborty’s car is still parked at a local club, but authorities have not been able to locate his whereabouts.
The victim, fearing for his life due to the threats made by the accused, has filed a petition with the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner seeking protection. Investigations are ongoing as the police attempt to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the crime. The police are also examining CCTV footage and other evidence to locate the remaining suspects.
As of now, no new arrests have been made, and the custody of the two arrested individuals will end soon. The case has drawn attention to the effectiveness of the police network, as many questions remain regarding the continued search for the primary accused. The arrested individuals are expected to be presented at the Barasat court as the investigation continues.
